What a small business website actually costs in India in 2026

Website Cost for Small Business in India: 3 Quotes, Decoded
Say you run a dental clinic, a furniture showroom or a mobile shop, and you are holding three website quotes: ₹12,000 from a freelancer, ₹45,000 from a local agency, and ₹1.5 lakh from a bigger agency that calls its work "custom". The honest answer to how much does a website cost in India for a small business is that the three numbers are not prices for the same thing.
The biggest difference between them usually isn't the launch price. It's what each one charges you again next year, and who owns the site when you want to leave. Hosting advertised at ₹69 a month renews at ₹289 on Hostinger India's own pricing page (read 13 Sep 2026). A ₹1 domain is a first-year offer. And since 15 March 2026, no SSL certificate can be valid for more than 200 days.
This guide decodes all three quotes line by line. It covers what a theme site, a hand-coded site and an online store include, what renews every year and at what rupee figure, who owns the domain and code, and eight questions to put to every vendor before you sign.
How much does a website cost in India for a small business in 2026?
Start with what the market publishes. Two agency guides that rank on page one for this search give these bands:
- Mayank Digital Labs (reviewed 9 Aug 2026): basic business site of 5–10 pages ₹15,000–50,000; professional WordPress site ₹30,000–80,000; e-commerce ₹40,000–2,00,000; custom application ₹1,50,000–5,00,000+; maintenance ₹2,000–10,000 a month.
- Apricorn Solutions (updated 6 Sep 2026): static site ₹5,000–40,000; business site ₹25,000–80,000; custom ₹45,000–5,00,000+; e-commerce ₹30,000–3,00,000+; hosting ₹2,000–15,000+ a year; maintenance ₹1,000–10,000+ a month.
Your three quotes, ₹12k, ₹45k and ₹1.5 lakh, all fall inside those bands. That is exactly why the bands don't help you choose. A ₹12,000 quote and a ₹1,50,000 quote can both be "normal" for website development cost in India in 2026.
What actually moves the price is a short list:
- How the site is made: a bought theme with your logo on it, a page builder like Elementor or Wix, or code written for your business.
- Number of pages and content: who writes the text and who shoots the photos.
- Features: appointment booking, a product catalogue, payments, a WhatsApp button, forms that land somewhere useful.
- What is bundled in year one: promo hosting, a ₹1 domain, a paid SSL certificate, a maintenance contract.
- Whether GST is in the number: 18% on a ₹45,000 quote is ₹8,100. Ask if the figure is "plus GST".
The quote that looks cheapest on day one can be the dearest by year three. So the useful comparison is not the headline number. It's a line-by-line one.
Three quotes, decoded: what ₹12k, ₹45k and ₹1.5 lakh actually buy
Stay with the hypothetical dental clinic. When the owner asks each vendor what's inside, the answers go like this. The ₹12,000 freelancer is building a WordPress theme site on promo shared hosting. The ₹45,000 agency's "custom design" turns out to be a premium theme plus Elementor Pro. The ₹1,50,000 agency is writing the site from scratch and bundling a 12-month annual maintenance contract (AMC). None of the three quotes lists year-2 costs or says whose name the domain and hosting account are in.
Here's the same information laid out so the quotes can be compared like for like:
| ₹12,000 freelancer | ₹45,000 agency | ₹1,50,000 agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it usually is | WordPress theme, promo hosting, ₹1 or free domain | Premium theme + Elementor Pro page builder | Code written from scratch + 12-month AMC |
| Renews every year | Hosting at renewal rate, domain, any paid plugins | Hosting, domain, Elementor Pro (about $59/yr), theme support if extended | Hosting (often cloud), domain, AMC renewal |
| Renews at (sourced figures) | Hostinger Single ₹289/mo (₹3,468/yr) or Premium ₹449/mo (₹5,388/yr); .in domain ₹800–899 | Same hosting and domain, plus licences billed in dollars | Hostinger Cloud Startup renews at ₹1,599/mo; AMC at whatever the agency sets |
| Who owns domain, hosting and code? | Ask: often the freelancer's account | Ask: often the agency's account | Ask: code ownership must be in the contract |
| SSL renews automatically? | Usually, if the host issues free Let's Encrypt certificates | Usually, same as left | Only if it's automated. A "paid 1-year SSL" line means someone reinstalls it by hand |
Two things jump out. First, the ₹12k and ₹45k quotes run on the same kind of hosting, so the extra ₹33,000 buys design time and a licence stack that renews in dollars. Second, the ₹1.5 lakh quote may be the only genuinely custom one, but its year-2 cost is whatever the AMC renewal says, and the quote doesn't say.
Website cost in India, year 1 vs year 2: what renews every year
This is the part cheap quotes leave out, and the reason people search "website renewal charges every year" after the first bill arrives.
Hosting. On Hostinger India's pricing page, every shared plan renews at 2.7x to 4.2x the promo rate on a 48-month term: Single ₹69 to ₹289 a month, Premium ₹149 to ₹449, Unlimited ₹249 to ₹649, Cloud Startup ₹599 to ₹1,599. The page doesn't say whether these include GST.
Domain. Hostinger lists .in at ₹1 for the first year (regular ₹899) and .com at ₹1 (regular ₹1,499). A 2026 Kwickhire guide gives GoDaddy's .in as ₹599 in year one and ₹800 from year two. So domain and hosting cost in India per year sits in the low thousands, once the promo ends.
Licences. A ThemeForest theme's Regular Licence is typically $59, with many top themes at $69 in 2026. It includes six months of author support, and extending support costs about 62.5% of the item price for another 12 months. Elementor Pro's single-site plan is about $59 a year. Builder subscriptions such as Wix run about ₹199 to ₹1,599 a month, billed annually.
Here's the year-1 vs year-2 view per tier, using only those figures:
| Tier | Year 1 | Year 2 onwards (before GST where added) |
|---|---|---|
| Theme site (₹12k quote) | ₹12,000, promo hosting and domain inside | Hosting ₹3,468–5,388 + .in domain ₹800–899, plus any paid plugins and maintenance |
| "Custom design" on a theme (₹45k) | ₹45,000 | Same hosting and domain + Elementor Pro about $59 + theme support if extended |
| Custom build with AMC (₹1.5L) | ₹1,50,000 incl. 12 months' AMC | Hosting + domain + AMC renewal (agency guides quote ₹1,000–10,000+ a month for maintenance) |
| Wix builder site | About ₹4,788 (Core plan) | About ₹4,788 every year. Stop paying and the site goes offline |
| Shopify store (Basic) | ₹1,499/mo billed yearly, plus fees on each sale | Same, every year, plus 18% GST according to third-party guides |
| Cybiqon hand-coded site | From ₹9,999 one-time, hosting included | Hosting and domain roughly ₹4,000–6,000, paid direct to the provider |
Website maintenance cost per year in India is the line that varies most. If you want it, get a monthly figure in writing and a list of what it covers.
Is a WordPress theme site cheaper than a custom-coded website in the long run?
On year-2 hosting, not much separates them. The difference is what the maintenance is actually for.
A theme site is WordPress core plus a theme plus a stack of plugins, and that stack is where the risk sits. Patchstack's State of WordPress Security in 2026 report counted 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, up 42% on 2024. 91% were in plugins and 9% in themes. Only six were in WordPress core, all low risk. 46% were still unpatched when they were made public, and for heavily exploited ones the median time to first attack was about five hours after disclosure.
So when a ₹12,000 quote says "we'll maintain it", that's a security job, and it needs doing every month whether or not anyone is paying for it.
Speed tells a similar story. The HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025 found that 45% of WordPress sites pass Google's Core Web Vitals on mobile, against 74% for Wix and 85% for Duda. The weak point is loading speed, and heavy themes and page-builder plugins are the usual culprits. A quote that sells "speed optimisation" as an add-on is fixing a problem the theme approach created.
In the custom website vs WordPress cost comparison, a hand-coded site has no theme or page-builder licence to renew, and it ships only the code the business needs. That doesn't make it maintenance-free or unhackable. It still needs hosting, updates to whatever it runs on, and someone who can change the text. But the plugin treadmill disappears.
The SSL line in your quote: 200 days now, 100 days from 15 March 2027
Some quotes still list a "1-year SSL certificate" at ₹1,500–5,000 a year, a range one of the agency guides above also mentions. That product no longer exists in its old form.
Under CA/Browser Forum Ballot SC-081v3, adopted on 11 April 2025, public SSL certificates can be valid for at most:
- 200 days from 15 March 2026
- 100 days from 15 March 2027
- 47 days from 15 March 2029
It was 398 days before. Sectigo and Encryption Consulting confirm the step dates.
What this means depends on how your certificate is issued. Automated certificates keep working: Let's Encrypt certificates already last 90 days and renew themselves through the hosting, so you don't need to do anything. Manually installed paid certificates become a recurring chore. Someone has to reissue and reinstall them at least twice a year now, four times a year from March 2027, or visitors see "Not Secure".
The question to ask all three vendors is simple: "Does SSL renew automatically, and who is responsible if it doesn't?" We've covered the details in the 200-day SSL renewal change.
Ecommerce website cost in India: Shopify pricing, Wix and fees on every sale
If the showroom wants to take orders online, the maths changes. It becomes a monthly bill plus a cut of every sale.
Shopify pricing in India (Shopify's own page, read 13 Sep 2026):
- Basic: ₹1,499 a month billed yearly (₹1,994 month-to-month)
- Grow: ₹5,599 a month yearly (₹7,447 monthly)
- Advanced: ₹22,680 a month yearly (₹30,164 monthly)
- Plus: from ₹1,75,000 a month
Shopify Payments isn't available in India, so every Indian store uses a third-party gateway. On top of the gateway's own charge, Shopify then takes 2% of each sale on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Razorpay's blog puts Basic plus Razorpay at about 4% of every sale. In its example, a store doing ₹5 lakh a month pays about ₹20,000 a month in payment costs. Third-party guides say the plan prices are before 18% GST.
Agency-built stores sit in the bands above: ₹40,000–2,00,000 (Mayank Digital Labs) or ₹30,000–3,00,000+ (Apricorn). If you're weighing those options, our guide to choosing an online store builder goes deeper.
Is Wix cheaper? In year one, often yes: about ₹199 to ₹1,599 a month. But a builder site never becomes something you own. Stop paying and it goes offline, and the site can't be moved to another host.
Who owns what: the domain, the hosting login and the code
This is the question almost no quote answers, and it's the one that decides whether you can ever leave.
- Domain: it should be registered in your name, or your business's name, with the login in your email. If the freelancer registered it in theirs, you're renting your own address. Owning it also matters for protecting your name, as covered in our post on lookalike domains using your company name.
- Hosting account: you should hold the login and pay the provider directly, so a renewal reminder reaches you, not someone who changed their number.
- Code: for a custom build, the contract should say the source code and repository transfer to you on handover. For a theme site, ask whose account bought the theme and plugin licences.
- Builder sites: on Wix or Shopify the site lives on their platform and runs only while the subscription does. A Wix site can't be moved to another host.
A website also isn't the same thing as being found. Local search is its own job, and it explains why a competitor shows up on Google and you don't, sometimes with a worse site. For the record, Cybiqon doesn't sell a monthly SEO retainer. The site is built so search engines can read it, and the rest is in that guide.
Eight questions to ask every website vendor before you sign
Send the same list to all three vendors and put the answers side by side:
- Is this a theme, a page builder, or code written for my business?
- What will I pay in year two, line by line: hosting, domain, licences, maintenance?
- Is the hosting price a promo rate? What does it renew at?
- Whose name and email is the domain registered in?
- Will I hold the hosting login and pay the provider directly?
- Do I get the source code and repository on handover, in writing?
- Does SSL renew automatically, and who fixes it if it doesn't?
- Is your quote inclusive of GST or "plus GST"?
A vendor who answers all eight clearly is worth more than the cheapest number on the table.
FAQs
What is the yearly cost of maintaining a website in India?
At a minimum, hosting and domain renewal: on Hostinger India, shared hosting renews at ₹3,468–5,388 a year and a .in domain at around ₹800–899. Add any theme or plugin licences (often billed in dollars) and a maintenance contract if you want one. Agency guides quote ₹1,000–10,000+ a month for maintenance.
Do I own my website's code and domain if an agency builds it?
Only if the contract says so. Ask for the domain in your name, the hosting login in your email and the source code transferred on handover. Builder platforms like Wix never give you the site itself.
Do I still need to pay for an SSL certificate every year?
Usually not. Most modern hosting issues free Let's Encrypt certificates that renew automatically. A paid certificate installed by hand now has to be reinstalled at least every 200 days, and every 100 days from 15 March 2027.
Is Wix or Shopify cheaper than getting a website built?
In year one, often. Over several years, a subscription never stops: Wix is about ₹4,788 a year on its Core plan, and Shopify Basic is ₹1,499 a month plus a 2% fee on each sale when you use a third-party gateway.
Is GST charged on domain, hosting and website development in India?
Check each quote. Shopify and Wix add 18% GST at checkout according to third-party guides, and Hostinger's page doesn't say either way. For any developer's quote, ask whether the figure is inclusive or "plus GST".
What Cybiqon would build for you
If your business needs a website that does its job, rather than a store or an app, Cybiqon builds custom websites written for your business. Hand-coded, mobile-first, with a WhatsApp button and forms wired to where you already read messages. It starts at ₹9,999 one-time and goes live in 2–3 weeks, and the first year of hosting is included. After that, hosting and domain run roughly ₹4,000–6,000 a year, paid directly to the provider with no markup. On handover you get 100% of the source code, the repository, the domain and the server credentials. For context, agencies typically charge ₹50,000+ for this work. The full breakdown is on our pricing page.

Conclusion
The real answer to how much does a website cost in India for a small business isn't the number on the quote. It's year one plus every year after, and who holds the keys. Put your quotes through the decoded table: what's included, what renews and at what rupee figure, whose name the domain and code are in, and whether SSL renews itself. Ask all eight questions. Once they're compared like for like, the right quote is usually obvious. If you'd like a second pair of eyes, Cybiqon is happy to look.
